FRANK ZAPPA Unofficial Releases

Over the last year or so there have been a lot of unofficial releases, mostly radio broadcasts, for both Zappa and Beefheart. These are of varying audio quality as you might expect.
Here's a guide to some of them. If you want to know more, please ask!

Frank Zappa
Puttin' On The Ritz

The November 17 1981 concert at the Ritz Theatre in New York (or most of it at least) featuring Al di Meola on two songs. Taken from a radio broadcast so the sound quality is good. Issued as both a double CD and as a 4LP box set.

Teenage Rockin' Combo

2CD or 3LP box set. The same recording as Puttin' On The Ritz. The vinyl version omits Drowning Witch, Stevies's Spankin, Zoot Allures so it fits on 3 discs (!). Audio quality unknown

Frank Zappa
Wollman Rink 1968

A live performance at the Schaefer Music Festival in New York on August 3 1968 (the late show). Taken from an audience recording so the sound quality is not great. Road Tapes #1 (recorded three weeks later on August 25) is much better!

Frank Zappa
Providence College Rhode Island

A live performance from the Bongo Fury tour, recorded on April 26 1975. An audience recording but good sound quality.

The Muffin Man Goes To College

Same recording as Providence College set. Audio quality unknown.

Frank Zappa
Mudshark Live

CHOM Montreal radio broadcast of the Mothers playing a largely acoustic set in the studio on July 5 1971. Very poor audio

Frank Zappa
Halloween In The Big Apple

Described as a live radio broadcast from Palladium NYC 31 October 1977 but in fact it's the "King Biscuit Flower Hour" broadcast (30 April 1978) - a mix from the whole Halloween '77 run. Good audio quality.

Frank Zappa
Bebop Tango Contest Live

A collection of live performances from 1973 assembled by FZ and broadcast on radio on New Years Eve 1974. Known as the "UN-Concert". Good audio quality.

Frank Zappa
The New Maternity

Taken from live radio broadcast recorded at VPRO-FM, Uddel, Netherlands on June 18 1970 (ie the very early Flo n Eddie band). Good sound quality.

Frank Zappa
Live At BBC

The "Colour Me Pop" TV show recorded on October 23 1968. Released as single-sided vinyl LP.
